Today marks the release of the debut record from a trio I’ve worked with for a long time now. Derrick Michaels, Mike Kuhl and myself have been playing in various configurations and different situations for a while now but a string of regular gigs that started around 2013 was where we more deeply developed our group chemistry and approach to improvising. The creative process in this group draws heavily on our experiences with both straight-ahead jazz and free improvisation, allowing us to address form and harmony, as well as melodic material, with a heightened sense of flow and creativity.
Before We Speak is a compilation of all original music composed by Derrick and myself that showcase our various approaches to improvisation. The album was tracked live, as a continuous set of music with no overdubs, no headphones, and no isolation at all. This was a very purposeful decision to attempt to capture the energy and fluidity of our live performances.
